Mr. Wendal

Do you remember that song Mr. Wendal?

Never thought twice about spending on a ol' bum,
until I had the chance to really get to know one
Now that I know him, to give him money isn't charity
He gives me some knowledge, I buy him some shoes
And to think blacks spend all that money on big colleges,
still most of y'all come out confused

I feed you dignity to stand with pride,
realize that all in all you stand tall

Well, today was one of those days filled with so much meaning. What day isn't really? And as I got to work with my double espresso in one hand and freshly squeezed apple juice over ice in the other I turned the key to open the shop doors walking into a quiet sea of wine. But, I decided to run next door to buy a head band. And playing in the beauty supply store was the song Mr. Wendal. It put a huge smile across my face. I started to rap it for myself (something I quite enjoy). Bums/homeless people, whatever you would like to call them are interesting kats. Back in the day living in the city of Baltimore I became acquainted with several. We may be more fortunate to have shelter, healthy food and water, but sometimes in exchange for some of this a homeless person may have some spiritual insight just worth trading. I learned once that if you can help someone than you should do what you can however if you can't then it is best to leave it at that...no more thought about it. A big smile and looking someone square in the eye and giving them a blessing can be a priceless trade..if it is genuine of course. It is an important tool to be aware of our good fortune, however the knowledge is to be shared. We all have something to give we just have to want to share it right? So as I left the beauty supply store with two headbands and a huge smile on my face I realized that my conscious thought of the need for a headband was in actuality my subconscious begging to hear Mr. Wendal's wisdom. Freedom comes within, no where else.
